Theracurmin HP

What the research says about this better-absorbed curcumin from turmeric, what it has and hasn't been shown to do, who paid for the studies, and the liver-injury reports tied to turmeric supplements.

Overall evidence Early20 sourcesReviewed November 5, 2026

Several small studies agree that this form gets far more curcumin into the blood, but the benefit trials of this product are small and mostly paid for by its developer, the stronger joint data come from other curcumin products, and turmeric supplements have been tied to liver injury.

The short version

  • I take Theracurmin HP from Integrative Therapeutics. It's curcumin from turmeric, dispersed as tiny colloidal particles so more of it reaches the blood1,2.
  • On absorption the evidence is consistent: in a crossover study of 24 healthy adults, exposure was 35.9 to 42.6 times higher than with plain curcumin powder3. Smaller studies agree, but they measure blood levels, not health1,4,5.
  • On benefits it gets thinner. A randomized trial of 50 people with knee osteoarthritis found less pain at 8 weeks, and an 18-month trial of 40 adults found memory gains6,7. Both are small, and Theravalues, the Japanese company that developed Theracurmin, financially supported the knee trial6.
  • The wider curcumin research on arthritis is more consistent, but it pools many different products8,9,10.
  • Turmeric supplements have caused liver injury, including one death among 10 cases in a US network, and in 7 Italian cases every product was a high-bioavailability formula at a high dose11,12.

The protocol

This is what the label and the research describe, not a prescription. My own dose and timing aren't listed here.

ParameterWhat the sources say
ProductTheracurmin HP: a serving is 2 capsules with 600 mg of Theracurmin, in 60- and 120-capsule bottles2,13
Label directionsAdults take 2 capsules daily or as recommended by a healthcare professional13
Curcumin contentA 2017 label gave the 600 mg as 30% curcumin, or 180 mg14. The current label record lists 600 mg of Theracurmin without that breakdown13
What the joint trials usedTheracurmin with 180 mg of curcumin a day, for 8 weeks to 12 months6,15
What the memory trial usedTheracurmin containing 90 mg of curcumin, twice daily, for 18 months7
What the absorption studies usedSingle doses from 30 mg to 210 mg of Theracurmin1,16
Wider curcumin meta-analysisAbout 1,000 mg of curcumin a day, from many different products8
TimingThe sources I opened don't specify a time of day or whether to take it with food

If the current capsules still carry 30% curcumin, as the 2017 label said, a 2-capsule serving matches the 180 mg of curcumin a day the joint trials used; the current label record doesn't say14,13,6. The wider curcumin research used far larger doses of other products, so its results don't transfer directly8.

How I use it

I take Theracurmin HP from Integrative Therapeutics. I haven't said here how much, when, or why.

Why it works

Plain curcumin is poorly absorbed, which is the whole reason this product exists. Theracurmin disperses curcumin as colloidal particles. In the original paper, exposure was more than 40-fold higher than with curcumin powder in rats and 27-fold higher in human volunteers given 30 mg1. In six healthy volunteers, plasma curcumin rose with the dose from 150 mg to 210 mg of Theracurmin, and the half-life was 9.7 to 13.0 hours16.

Against other branded curcumins, a double-blind crossover in 9 people found Theracurmin's peak 10.7 times higher than BCM-95 and 5.6 times higher than Meriva, though the products carried different amounts of curcumin4. A drinkable form beat three other curcumin beverages by 1.5 to 4.0 times on exposure5.

Better absorption is a means, not an outcome. Whether more curcumin in the blood means more benefit is what the trials below try to answer.

What the research says

Moderate It absorbs far better than curcumin powder. Small crossover and pharmacokinetic studies in healthy adults all point the same way1,16,5,4,3. The newest, a randomized three-period crossover in 24 adults, put the peak ratio at 18.4 to 20.5 and the exposure (AUC) ratio at 35.9 to 42.6 versus powder, with a median time to peak of 1.5 to 3 hours versus 8 hours3. Two caveats: these measure blood levels only, and most have company ties. The original paper's lead author is listed with Theravalues Corporation, the Morimoto and Sunagawa groups describe Theracurmin preparations as their own, and the 2021 study was sponsored by Handok, Inc., which employs one of its authors1,5,4,3.

Moderate Curcumin for arthritis pain, in general. A meta-analysis of 8 randomized trials of turmeric extract (about 1,000 mg a day of curcumin) found lower pain than placebo (mean difference −2.04, 95% CI −2.85 to −1.24, from 3 trials) and lower WOMAC scores (−15.36, 95% CI −26.9 to −3.77, from 4 trials), but no difference from pain medication in 5 trials; its authors say the trials are too few and too small for a definitive conclusion8. A later meta-analysis of 15 trials with 1,621 people with osteoarthritis found lower pain and WOMAC scores than placebo, effects similar to NSAIDs, and fewer adverse events than NSAIDs9. A network meta-analysis of 23 studies with 2,175 knee osteoarthritis patients put curcumin's pain reduction at −1.63 on a visual analog scale (95% CI −2.91 to −0.45) versus placebo10. These pool many preparations, so they aren't proof about Theracurmin.

Early Theracurmin for knee osteoarthritis. A double-blind trial of 50 patients (Kellgren-Lawrence grade II or III) found knee pain lower on Theracurmin with 180 mg of curcumin a day than on placebo at 8 weeks, except in those with the lowest pain scores at the start, with less need for celecoxib and no major side effects; the authors call its potential modest6. A 6-month open-label study of 50 people judged 34 (75.6%) "effective" and 11 not, with five dropouts and no placebo group17. A one-year trial in people who'd had knee cartilage surgery (43 examined) found no difference in symptom scores, but better cartilage stiffness and surface roughness on Theracurmin at second-look arthroscopy15. Theravalues financially supported the 2014 and 2022 trials, and two of the 2014 authors were its full-time employees6,15.

Early Memory. In an 18-month double-blind trial of 40 adults aged 51 to 84 without dementia, Theracurmin containing 90 mg of curcumin twice daily improved long-term retrieval memory (between-group effect size 0.68, p = 0.05) and attention on Trail Making A (0.67, p = 0.04) versus placebo, with brain PET scans in 15 people per group7. Forty people is small, and the p-values sit right at the edge.

Early Cancer. A phase I study gave Theracurmin with 200 mg (10 patients) or 400 mg (6 patients) of curcumin a day, alongside gemcitabine-based chemotherapy, to people with pancreatic or biliary tract cancer that standard chemotherapy had failed. It found no unexpected adverse events, and 3 patients continued for more than 9 months18. That's a safety study. It says nothing about whether curcumin helps treat the cancer.

Moderate Liver injury: the harm is real, though its rate is unknown. The US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network found 10 turmeric-associated cases enrolled between 2004 and 2022, 6 of them since 2017: median age 56, 8 women, 5 hospitalized, and 1 death from acute liver failure, with injury typically appearing 1 to 4 months after starting. Seven of the 10 carried the gene variant HLA-B*35:01, an allele frequency of 0.450 against 0.056 to 0.069 in population controls, and 3 of the 7 products tested also contained piperine from black pepper11. In Italy, 28 spontaneous reports of acute hepatitis linked to turmeric supplements arrived in the first six months of 2019, and regulators acted19. In 7 cases from Tuscany, every product was a high-bioavailability formula at a high curcumin dose and most people improved after stopping; in 23 published cases, most patients were also taking another medication12. These are case series, so they don't give a rate, and none of these sources names Theracurmin11,19,12.

Rhonda Patrick on curcumin absorption

In FoundMyFitness Q&A #8, "Curcumin Bioavailability and Exercise—Plus Coffee and Brain Health," posted February 8, 2020, Rhonda Patrick compares curcumin formulations20. The show notes list piperine at about 20-fold more bioavailable than unformulated curcumin, micronized crystalline curcumin at 28-fold, and the Meriva phytosome at about 29-fold, and the episode takes up whether curcumin blunts the benefits of exercise20. In the transcript she points out that these figures come from separate studies against plain curcumin rather than head-to-head tests, and that studies like these are often funded by the formulation's maker. Theracurmin doesn't come up in the show notes or the transcript20. Her covering the topic doesn't mean she endorses me, this product, or this site.

About Integrative Therapeutics

Integrative Therapeutics, LLC, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, makes Theracurmin HP, and its label says Schwabe North America licenses the Theracurmin name from Theravalues Corporation13. Theravalues, of Tokyo, developed Theracurmin and financially supported the 2014 and 2022 knee trials1,6,15. The brand sits in the Schwabe group, not with Nestlé; the companies page has the ownership sources and the full profile.

Cautions

  • The label says not to take it if pregnant or nursing, and to consult a healthcare professional first for anyone with gallstones or a bile duct obstruction or on any medication13.
  • Liver injury has been reported with turmeric supplements, typically 1 to 4 months after starting in the US series, and the Tuscan cases all involved high-bioavailability products at high doses11,12. Better absorption is the point of this product, and it's also the feature those cases share. Tell the doctor you take it.
  • The joint and memory results come from small trials, and the stronger joint evidence is for curcumin in general, not Theracurmin6,7,8.
  • The maker's page claims support for detoxification pathways, cardiovascular function, and muscle recovery, and says the FDA hasn't evaluated those claims2.
